Harlequin 1500pt Army List and Tactics

I’ve always been one for making out of the ordinary lists ( Deathwing, Sanguinary Guard etc) and I still haven’t got it into my head that I can take allies for tactical benefits…. So I’ve written a full Harlequin army list using the Cegorach’s Revenge Formation which gives the army the ability to run and charge and also re-roll 1’s on invulnerable saves – both fantastic benefits.

Now the formation is very restricted on what you have to take which a lot of people dislike. For me however I was planning a very similar force anyway so the benefits are just added bonuses!

I found it pretty difficult to add everything I wanted into the list, the squads of Troupes become expensive very quickly! Originally I wanted each squad in a star weaver but could only fit in one in the end. Besides they’re pretty fast on foot so the transport is just a little lost fire power.

Tactics wise I plan to run a Shadow Seer in each squad whilst the Death Jesters sit in cover at the back making use of their main weapon. Hopefully they’ll be enough Harlequin units in the opponents face to worry about single Death Jesters – alternatively I could put them together as a squad but the chance to cause three morale checks rather than one is to tempting.

DSCF3720.JPGThe level 2 Shadow Seer joins the Troupe in the Starweaver which also contains the Warlord Troupe Master. This squad has three Harlequin Embrace (D3 S6 Hammer of Wrath each) – hopefully jumping out of their transport, running ( with a re-roll from fleet) and then charging ( with a re-roll from fleet) meaning they should be in assault turn 2.

The other two squads run across the board on foot, making use of cover. Even on turn two they should be in assault with the re-rolls.

The jetbikes I originally had with just the Haywire weapons – however they have a lot of attacks each and seemed a waste to not use them and I needed to have some ap2 weapons in the army without relying on good rolls for the troupe units. So their initial role is anti-tank (haywire rocks and they’re s5 ap2 on charge) with terminator killing as a secondary role. They’ll not do much on their own but teamed with a troupe unit there should be enough attacks to take on the hardest units.

The Void Weavers will just shoot tanks, simples!

DSCF3699.JPGThe Soliatiare will do what he does best and charge things, making himself look scary and hopefully taking attention away from the rest of the army. He has a 3+ Invulnerable save re-rolling 1’s. Even though he’s T3 he’s still pretty resilient!

Now the one big main weakness of the army… Fliers. There is nothing in the list to take on fliers reliably. You either need to hope you roll sixes with Shrieker/Shuriken cannons or get a good roll on the Mystery Objecives (using the Death Jesters to capture them).

Overall the army relies on quite a few different tactics compared to oher armies. Multiple LD tests from Death Jesters and Shadow Seers play an important role and used correctly (and with some luck) the army can do pretty well… especialy for dancing elves!

Hey mate, could you do some side-by-side comparisons with the new Harlequin models and some of the old ones? And even some other Eldar/Dark Eldar models if you got any? I heard the new Harlequins are out of scale compared to the old ones and would like to verify.

    Cheers 🙂

I’ll see if I can find my metal harlequins 🙂

i have played an 2000 point all harlequin game vs dark eldar eldar alliance. Deployment and tactics have to be spot on or you will get obliterated the caress works well auto wound a roll to hit of six plus 8 rolls equals 1-3 auto wounds at ap2. The 5 plus invul is poor use a psy power to improve it to 4 either forewarning or santic sanctuary . Other way to go is take heroes path with it and the death jester solitaire and shadowseer from that gets shrouded and stealth gives a 4 plus cover in open a two plus in cover.

Played a few games so far, and yeah you need to be spot on with movement and placing of models otherwise they just drop dead. I’m in process of writing a Tactica for the harlequins based on the formation I use in the above list 🙂
I like Phantasmancy too much to go to the other disciplines.. All the powers are good whereas in the others some are a bit meh. And my squads on foot need veil of tears!

  • ENixon

    Great list here
Think i might nick this list and ally it with some eldar to get some snipers, a wraithknight and wraithguard, a flier and an avatar and paint them all up in harlequin colours for a rough 3000 point army of clowns

  • Mad-Mike

This is a decent list, i would lose some upgrades to bring in more models however.

  • Mad-Mike

Since you are running and shooting in the same turn, i would lose some gun upgrades. How many points are you spending on Power Swords? They arent free anymore right?

  • http://www.the-vanus-temple.com Dezartfox

Don’t really have any gun upgrades, just one per squad ‘just in case’ as it can’t hurt to take a wound off a MC before charging! I haven’t got any power swords as the Caress is better for the auto wounding compared to s3 in the next round.

Even after dropping upgrades you don’t get many more harlequins 🙁

  • Oliver Richardson

all you have to do is ally them with skitarri to solve all your antitank needs XD. No, I mean it; Duncrawlers just obliterate every vehicle in the game with their neutron laser, and the Katephron destroyers have nice heavy Grav cannons, AND the tech preistr dominus is a very good hard to kill HQ choice for all you harliquin players out thier!
