Ravenwing: The Black Sun Rises

I managed to get my sticky fingers on a collection of new Ravenwing (now RW) bikers and speeders along with Sammael (now known as Sammy) on his jetbike. To get this army up to 1500 I’ll only need a couple of purchases, and with the RW Battelforce being excellent value I’ll be getting that!

Now, last time I mentioned RW on here, I was told the list could be built using the Marine codex, and it’s true, it can! However there are a few differences that I don’t like, so I wont be using the Marine list.

So, here’s the list:

Sammael on Land Speeder
– Twin Assault Cannon
– Twin Heavy Bolter = 205

Command RW Bike Squadron
– +3 bikes
– 2 Plasma Guns
– Sergeant with Plasma Pistol and powerfist
– Apothecary (Holding a Plasma Gun)

+ Attack Bike
– Multimelta

= 355

RW Attack Squadron
– +3 bikes
– 2 meltas
– Sergeant with power Weapon

+ Attack Bike
– Heavy Bolter

+ Land Speeder
– Assault Cannon and Heavy Bolter

= 405

RW Attack Squadron
– +3 bikes
– 2 meltas
– Sergeant with power Weapon

+ Attack Bike
– Heavy Bolter

+ Land Speeder
– Assault Cannon and Heavy Bolter

= 405

RW Attack Squadron
– 2 Flamers
= 130

Sammy on his speeder flies around with the other two speeders hunting infantry and light vehicles, Sammy has twin linked Bs5 weapons, so will rarely miss. Also with his front and side armour of 14 he’ll be hard to take down, he’ll also be providing a shield for the other speeders. I’m even going to convert one of the speeders to get the weapon on the opposite side so I can fire around Sammy! Cheeky.
The two Heavy Bolter attack bikes will probably join them and will be on the hunt for infantry too and lone attack bike with Multimelta will hang around with the bikers.
The Command squad is my Heavy Infantry killer. if something need taking down they’ll be the ones doing it. Armed with 2 plasma guns and a plasma pistol they can unleash 5 S7 ap2 shots at 12″, and because the Apothecary is there, overheating shouldn’t be a problem. This unit will always usually remain as one big unit of 6, or if I do want to split them, they’ll remain together to benefit from the apothecary’s rule.
The two normal squads are tank hunters. I can split them into combat squads (each with a melta) to go tank hunting. Easy and simple.
The last squad is a Horde hunter. They’ll be the ones fishing out units in cover or speeding onto an objective late game, they can still give support fire-power with the bikes bolters too!
Originally I had another attack bike, but swapped him out for some upgrades on the sergeants.

The best thing about this army, is that every unit (except sammy) is a scoring unit, because of the wording in the DA codex the Landspeeders count as scoring despite being a vehicle. Even if the attack squadron wasn’t a troop choice, the speeders and attack bikes always count as scoring.
So, when split up into combat squads, I have a total of 12 scoring units, or 8 without splitting the squads. All capable of going 24″ in one turn.

Sammy in Landspeeder
21 Bikes
2 Landspeers
3 Attack bikes

Groovy.

Hi Tim, my friend James runs a badass Ravenwing army where everything usually outflanks.

Unlike yours however, his is all melta guns on his bikes and multimeltas on the attack bikes.
I have to agree with him that plasma and flamers aren't worth taking for this army. You just need to hit hard, cripple vehicles and if you're fighting a swarm, use your speed to get into a good position and hammer them with everything you have.

Although plenty of Landspeeders with heavy bolter and assault cannon firing en masse typically take out all troops.

Kudos on giving Sammy the 'flying land raider' instead of the new 'buckin bronco'. He's amazing in the Landspeeder.

Also, Landspeeders Do Not Count as scoring units, but the Attack Bikes do. This was the ruling at the GT

I so look forward to seeing this army tiim. should be AWESOME. Stripey too?

Wicked man, I always loved Biker armies.
I disagree with Darkseer though, about the Plasma guns, what if you come up against a Lash Prince?
He could move you INTO cover, and you certainly don't want that for BIKERS!

The many Assault Cannon should damage those very well, but the Plasma Guns can finish them off, and are also useful against 2+ armour enemies, which he has very little to shoot at with.
